Some States Don’t Use the Public Land Survey System (PLSS)
There actually, believe it or not, some states in the union that do not use these surveys.
Keep in mind, however, that they do have their own system and set federal as well as
state regulations that they do and require adherence to. In case you are wondering what
states don’t use these public land survey systems, they are as follows, in alphabetical
order: Georgia, Connecticut, Delaware, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts,
New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island,
South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.



Why Such Surveys are Critical in Development and Growth
Without the aid of such surveys there would really not be any organization to building
efforts and proper land development. Such surveys have procured vast ordinances and
laws over the years, all which are of great importance. Like zoning laws, for example.
With such surveys, such different common zones, like commercial, residential and
industrial – which have a myriad of different under zones, such as ‘light zones,’ attached
to their importance. Such surveys enable entities to effectively build and design both
aesthetically pleasing structures, and to keep the balance of organization intact during the
process of overall development.
